Asian Cup still kicking goals for local soccer clubs

Victorian football projects to receive funds

Traralgon Olympians and Traralgon City Soccer Club are the latest grassroots soccer clubs to benefit from better facilities thanks to our special Victorian Asia Cup 2015 Legacy Fund.

Minister for Sport John Eren joined Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing and Melbourne Victory star Archie Thompson today to announce $100,000 to install new LED lighting towers on two more soccer pitches at Harold Preston Reserve in Traralgon.

Players and clubs will soon have access to five pitches under lights, meaning that male and female players can train more often and safely, later into the evening.

It’s all part of our work to give back to the community by upgrading pavilions, installing synthetic pitches and new lighting across the state.

The Andrews Labor Government has announced all 11 soccer projects that will receive funding from the Fund:

  • New pavilion at JT Gray Reserve in Williamstown North
  • One new natural turf and one new synthetic pitch at Painted Hills Recreation Reserve in Doreen
  • New lighting at Newhaven Reserve in Newhaven
  • New lighting at Harold Preston Reserve in Traralgon
  • Reconstruction of the oval including new drainage, irrigation and turf at Highfield Park (North Oval) in Camberwell
  • New drainage system at Betula Reserve in Doveton
  • New lighting at H.V Jones Reserve in Ferntree Gully
  • New lighting at Belmont Park in South Croydon
  • New lighting at Sumner Park in Brunswick East
  • New lighting and resurface the ground at Mary Mackillop College in Leongatha
  • New lighting at Masons Lane Sportsground in Bacchus Marsh

Record numbers of boys and girls, men and women, are signing up to play soccer, and they deserve the very best facilities. More than 66,000 Victorians played in grassroots soccer competitions in 2016.

The success of the 2015 AFC Asian Cup exceeded all expectations and as a result, delivered a $1.6 million windfall that we are now using to upgrade soccer grounds and encourage more people to play the world game.
