Team App Cup Holders Boroondara In Thrilling Comeback Win
By Angela Christian-Wilkes
The Team App Cup kicked off at the weekend with 14 first-round Ties featuring clubs from Zagame's State Leagues.
South Melbourne marked its first competitive game of the season with a 4-1 win on Friday night against Berwick City. The other Friday winner as Monbulk 3-0 against Whitehorse United.
Cup holder Boroondara Eagles started their defence with the scoreline they finished with in last year's final - 5-3 – albeit with a very different looking team - Sarah Petty the only remaining player from last year's triumph against FC Bulleen Lions.
Keilor Park was able to start out on top with Bianca Ortika scoring in the 10th minute.
However, Borondarra’s Ellen Turner was able to equalise six minutes later and then send the Eagles out on a 2-1 lead by half time.
Keilor Park equalised with another goal from Ortika, but Rebecca Cain’s goal moved Borondarra to 3-2.
A red card for Keilor Park's Sherridan Long was quickly followed by a goal from both sides, and Ellen Turner collected Borondarra’s fifth and final goal in the 90th minute.
A similar tug of war was reflected with Bundoora’s 4-2 win away to Knox City.
Richmond SC hosted Melbourne University at Kevin Bartlett Reserve. The game began on steady footing, both sides finding their feet and having shots on goal.
However, in the 33rd minute, Amy Froud was given the space to make a soaring shot into the left top corner out of goalie Stephanie Dwyer’s reach.
A handball in the box followed by a successful penalty kick from Melbourne Uni’s Robina Todd had them in lead 2-0 at half time.
Elena Reid made her entrance into the game in the 56th minute, followed by Georgia Johnson in the 58th, bringing the score to 4-0.
Todd scored again in the 70th minute which was trailed by an own goal from Richmond.
Reid concluded the match and collected a hat trick with goals in the 80th and 85th minute.
In the round's feature game, Monash University won 7-0 against Meadow Park Eagles. Stephanie Wood scored a hat-trick for Monash while Rebecca Drew, Chantelle Herman, Yani Cornthwaite and Morgan Kirk-Eaton were other scorers.
An action gallery from the game will be available on the FFV Facebook page this week.
