The campaign invites all Australians to reflect on what they can do to counter racism, wherever it happens. Businesses can play an important role in preventing and responding to racism.
Many Australian employers have already shown an awareness of the business advantages of supporting cultural diversity. These include benefits to employees, customers and other key stakeholders, improving the image of their business in a culturally diverse world, and adding to the bottom line. Commercial gains, innovation, creativity and access to a wider labour pool are just some of the benefits for workplaces that aim to reduce cultural barriers and increase acceptance of difference. Identifying and addressing unconscious bias and systemic barriers to racial equality are also critically important for building capacity and innovation within businesses. Not doing so can detract from positive efforts to support cultural diversity.
The campaign is a key initiative of the National Anti-Racism Strategy which was launched in 2012. This invitation is extended to Australian businesses as an opportunity to complement and build on that work. Addressing racial discrimination, particularly where institutional racism and unconscious bias may be factors, can be challenging. That is why this initiative is vital in providing renewed energy to boost efforts in these areas. Furthermore, signing up to this National Anti-Racism initiative will unite and recognise committed Australian businesses as leaders in building cultural diversity within the workplace.
