Football Federation Victoria (FFV) is pleased to confirm that the pitches at Darebin State Football Centre have been confirmed to be replaced in 2017. FFV and Darebin City Council are working together on the timing for the pitch replacements, and because of this bookings for the 2017 season will not be taken at this stage.
As part of an internal assessment of facilities, FFV reviewed the use of the pitches at the State Football Centre (Darebin) and made a decision to close Pitches 1 and 2 for the 2016 season.
The three synthetic pitches at Darebin are over 12 years old. FFV, in conjunction with Darebin City Council, has undertaken a program of remedial works and maintenance on the pitches in order to prolong their useful life as pitches of match standard. However despite those efforts, the condition of the pitches has deteriorated to the point that pitches 1 and 2 are no longer suitable for match usage.
FFV’s specialist pitch maintenance provider for the facility has confirmed that further remedial work will not be sufficient to return the pitches to a condition satisfactory for competitive use. As a result, FFV had no choice but to close Pitches 1 and 2 from match usage for the 2016 football season. Pitches 1 and 2 remain available for light training sessions, while at this stage Pitch 3 remains suitable and available for match usage.
FFV made this decision in conjunction with the technical department as well as external advice, and the decision was not taken lightly. Careful consideration has been given to the needs of our stakeholders, and to the available alternatives. Player safety and welfare was also considered and is a paramount consideration for FFV.
