State Teams Tour VIS
LAST Saturday morning, two of the four state squads for the upcoming Boys National Youth Championships met with VIS Head Coach Ian Greener for a tour of the VIS facilities at Olympic Park.
With the Boys National Youth Championships taking place in just over 3 weeks the tour was a great opportunity for all players to get an insight into how the Victorian Institute of Sport works and also a great opportunity to get to know Ian Greener, who will be one of many talent scouts watching from the stands at the championships.
The facilities at the VIS are world class, with top quality gym facilities, as well as pool, spa and heat chambers that match any facilities that the world can offer. Previous scholarship holders have included Adrian Leijer (Fulham), Matthew Spiranovic (FC Nurnberg) and Vincenzo Grella (Blackburn Rovers).
The same facilities are shared by many Olympic athletes, which brought home almost 33% of Australian medals at the Beijing Olympics, which would’ve placed VIS inside the top 20 on the overall medal tally.
With trials for the next intake of VIS scholarships set to occur very soon these tours provide a fantastic opportunity for all participants find out about the program, what is involved and why they might want to seek a scholarship.
Parents were also welcomed to the information session so as to know the commitment that is required from not just the scholarship holder, also the parents themselves.
The other two state squads will tour the VIS facilities and meet Ian Greener this weekend as the Boys National Youth Championships gets closer.

Four Victorian Girls Selected in National Training Camps
FOUR Victorian girls have been thrust into national team contention following breakout performances at the National Youth Championships for Girls in Coffs Harbour.
Stephanie Catley, Brianna Davey, and Ashley Brown from the Victorian under 15 state squad and Ursula Hughson from the under 17 team have been included in Australian training camps.
Catley, Davey, and Brown will attend the national under 17 camp while Hughson has been invited to join the under 20s.
National Training Centre Head Coach Matt Shepherd was pleased with the representation, saying all girls had given themselves a chance to represent their country.
"Players have attended camps from Victoria in the past and not remained at that level with the exception of Melissa Barbieri,” Shepherd said.
”We will focus on preparing the players mentally for the challenge ahead.
”They will need to adjust to the expectations that the national coaches have and the general demands of football at a national level.
"There are other players who can consider themselves very close to this level too so we were really pleased with how a lot of the girls performed.”
Shepherd was referring to Stephanie Tanti and Caitlin Friend who both performed exceptionally well at the national championships and can consider themselves unlucky not to be included in the training camps.
Three out of the four players selected in the national camps attend the National Training Centre program, and have benefited from the focused development environment.
Shepherd hopes to unearth more raw talent and continue to raise the standards of the NTC players in the coming months.
"There is no doubt more players out there could be a part of this training program,” he said.
”The journey starts for these players now with their summer zone team and then, progressing through the state teams after that.
”The best from there will then join the NTC.
”If you are interested in becoming an elite athlete, you have to enlist with a zone squad in the coming weeks.
At FFV, we are really looking forward to seeing the best playing and training with the best."
Players interested in becoming a zone participant, should continue to check the FFV website for information in the coming weeks.
Victorians Shine at Friendship Games

State Squads Nearing Completion
The state teams to represent Victoria Metro and Country are nearing completion for this years National Championships and Friendship Games.
With only 16 being able to make the journey for each group, the fight for spots is hitting fever pitch. A coveted blue shirt awaits only the best in the state and the chance to battle against Victoria's rivals.
The squads have been through the rigorous trial period and now have been whittled down to almost reach completion. With the final squads to be announced mid-may there isn't long left now and all must be left on the training track with plenty putting in the hard yards to show how much representing their state would mean to them.
We wish all the best to all who remain in the hunt for a plane ticket to the championships. Please stay tuned for final squads to be announced soon!
For those attending state squad trials, please remember to check your email (including the junk folder!) for information regarding trials and further selection. Confirmation of receiving these emails will need to be sent to acarey@footballfedvic.com.au to confirm your attendance at the next round of trials.
National Championships Dates Announced
Dates for the Girls National Youth Championships have been announced, with the tournament running from July 5th - 12th in Coffs Harbour featuring the nations best Under 15 and Under 17 Girls. Victoria will be fielding state teams in both age categories.
Meanwhile dates have also been announced for the Friendship Games to be played in Sydney from July 7th - 12th for the nations best Under 13 Boys and Girls. Victoria will be fielding both Country and Metropolitan teams in this tournament.
State Squads Starting to Heat Up
The Victorian state squads are now starting to hot up.
With 462 kids nominated in numerous age groups from Under 13’s to Under 17’s, preparation is now taking place for the national championships to be held later this year.
While nominations for the squads were taken back in December, a series of training sessions have since seen the numbers diminish from 462 to less than 150 as the cream of the crop have risen.
A trip to the friendship games in Sydney in July awaits the best of the Under 13 Boys and Girls. Both regional and metropolitan teams will represent the Big V as they do battle against the nation’s best.
Meanwhile, also in July, the Girls Under 15 and 17 state teams will head off to Coffs Harbour as they also prepare to battle for the crown of champions of Australia.
Nominations for the Under 14 and 15 Boys teams have recently just closed and trials will begin shortly to find the state’s best. The prize of representing Victoria at the national championships in Coffs Harbour in September is on offer.
The trials and phases that will be undertaken to find the best of the best in Victoria are specifically designed to see all players involved follow the player pathway that was designed with the FFA’s Talented Player Pathway.
In 2008, FFV will field the following teams at the:
Friendship Games in Sydney from July 7th - 12th.
