FFV Celebrates Victorian World Cup Selections

Five Victorians Picked For Socceroos' FIFA World Cup Squad

Football Federation Victoria would like to congratulate the five Victorian players called up to the Caltex Socceroos squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia starting later this month.

Aziz Behich, Jackson Irvine, Mathew Leckie, Jamie Maclaren and Andrew Nabbout were picked in the final 23 over the weekend and will now prepare in anticipation of the Socceroos' opening match against France on Saturday June 16.

It is Leckie's second FIFA World CUp selection after going to the 2014 tournament in Brazil, while the other four players have been picked for the first time.

FFV CEO Peter Filopoulos took the opportunity to celebrate the unsung heroes behind developing Victoria's World Cup Socceroos.

"It is special that these five players have realised the dream of playing in a World Cup, something that every young child aspires to do when they first pull on a pair of boots," Filopoulos said.

"The whole nation will unite behind the Socceroos to support them at the FIFA World Cup, and for all of Victoria there will be a passionate interest in the contribution of Aziz, Jackson, Mathew, Andrew and Jamie to the national team.

"I want to personally congratulate the clubs, coaches and volunteers whose selfless contribution helped five boys grow up in our game and become the Socceroos they are today. This is what grassroots is all about, and I am sure there will be many in our broad football landscape who will proudly recall the role they have played in helping a player realise the dream of representing the Socceroos in a World Cup."
