FFV NTC Player Selected For Matildas Camp

Kyra Cooney-Cross Called Up By Coach Alen Stajcic

FFV NTC player Kyra Cooney-Cross has been selected for senior Westfield Matildas camp being held at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra this week.

Cooney-Cross, 15, was selected for the NTC program in 2016 and played for the Junior NTC team before progressing to become a regular senior PlayStation®4 NPL Victoria Women's player with Senior NTC this season.

Cooney-Cross' performances in PS4 NPLW and at the 2016 Westfield National Youth Championships led to selection for the Westfield Young Matildas for the AFC U-16 Women's Championship qualifiers in August 2016.

The winger/forward was one of a number of Victorian players who played in the NPLW Select Squad series held in Victoria in May and June. Coached by Senior NTC coach Stefan Busso against PlayStation 4 NPL Victoria Boys 14-year-old teams, the NPLW Select was made up of NTC players and women's national team prospects across Senior, Young and Junior ages.

Young Matildas coach Gary Van Egmond and senior Westfield Matildas coach Alen Stajcic both travelled to Victoria to coach a match in the six-game series.

“We’ve got 18 players playing overseas so this camp is a good opportunity to bring some local players in who have been on the fringe and let them experience the environment and demands of national team camp,” Stajcic said.

“Having them be able to train and mix it with some of the more senior players is really beneficial as it is part of the strategy of evolving our team culture and improving our leadership within the group.”
