BUILDING BETTER HEALTH CHOICES FOR KIDS
Kids & Fruit Inc is working with schools and sporting groups, including Football Federation Victoria, to build better health choices for Australian kids.

According to the NSW Australasian Paediatric Endocrinology Group, ‘for every 100,000 Australian kids under the age of 15, 2-3 have Type 2 diabetes. Specialists in this field predict this will increase dramatically in the future’ (Herald Sun, 26.11.2007).

Kids & Fruit is a non-profit charitable initiative which is a ‘hassle-free, practical and very affordable’ solution to helping young people fight against Type 2 diabetes, childhood obesity and some forms of cancer. Currently over 10,000 kids throughout Victoria participate in the program and reaping the many benefits.

The solution is simple! To educate and increase young peoples' awareness of the vast variety of Australian fruit and vegetables available to them, by delivering fresh produce to schools, kindergartens and sporting groups each week and getting children to eat the same fruit or vegetable as their peers. The fruit and vegetables range from all varieties of apples and pears to carrots and kiwi fruit. In a survey conducted in August 2006, 95% of participating parents rated the Kids & Fruit Inc. very positively as they believe that ‘through simple intervention their children have increased their healthy snacking and were no longer making chocolate and lollies their first preference’.

Kids & Fruit Inc. and Football Federation Victoria have joined forces to promote the synergy between healthy eating and physical activity. Both parties hope to achieve awareness amongst young people of the importance of maintaining a healthy balanced diet, including lots of fruit and vegetables, if they wish to perform at their optimum best when playing their favourite sport.

As of 2007, Kids & Fruit Inc. and Football Federation Victoria will be providing fruit to all participants of metropolitan Melbourne’s GoalKick programs and school clinics. The type of fruit will change from week to week (ie. Pluots the first week, mandarins the second week, etc) so kids have the opportunity to taste the many varieties grown in Australia. The fruit will be supplied to all participants before, during or after each session. From time to time, Kids & Fruit Inc’s ‘Aussie the Apple’ and ‘Packy the Pear’ will visit the clinics and train with the young participants whilst teaching the kids about the importance of having a piece of fruit over junk food.
