Richmond leapfrog Stars with first points

Richmond 4-1 Southern Stars

Richmond has recorded their maiden win of the 2013 Victorian Premier League season after defeating Southern Stars 4-1 at Kingston Heath on Saturday night.

A first half brace to former Melbourne Heart youngster Kliment Taseski gave Richmond a 2-0 lead at the break whilst goals from Erhan Karahan and Josh Groenwald sealed a valuable three points for the visitors.

After eight consecutive losses Richmond was desperate for a win and it showed early as Nick Krousoratis? mazy dribble down the left was rewarded when he neatly slotted the ball across goal to Taseski who jammed the ball into the roof of the net.

Taseski followed up with another moments later as Richmond had Stars on the ropes and threatened to overrun the home side.

With Richmond having the clear ascendancy in the first period, it was going to take something special for the home side to get back into the game.

Southern Stars? Marvin Hamilton-Omole decided to take matters into his own hands and fired a free kick in from 25 yards that beat the outstretched Oscar Vonk in the Richmond goal.

But as Stars threw numbers forward Richmond hit them twice in the space of a minute - firstly captain Erhan Karahan stepped up.

Richmond continued to push in an attempt to close the game out and were rewarded with a penalty after Hamlet Armenian was hacked down in the area. Captain Karahan's penalty was expertly saved by Kerim Koc but Karahan made amends by smashing home the rebound.

Only moments later the result was sealed after Koc spilled a tame effort from Josh Groenwald and gave the visitors a 4-1 advantage which they thoroughly deserved.

Richmond coach Grant Brebner was pleased with his sides win.

"Tonight we finally put all the pieces of the jigsaw together,? he said.

?I don't think we have been that bad in the games that we've been losing but the result is pleasing and it's the beginning of a journey we are trying to get to.

"The boys have worked extremely hard since I've come and the results have not been the best. But now we work towards our quest to win the bottom half of the league."
