Max Stern, AM, 1921-2016

Max Stern AM, an iconic figure of Victorian football passed away yesterday, aged 95.

Football Federation Victoria wishes to express its sincere condolences to the Stern family on behalf of the football community.

Stern was so dedicated to football he was still playing as a registered player into his ninth decade and could still be seen at Caulfield park for a kick-about into his early 90s.

Stern was a life member of North Caulfield Football Club and was involved with the club since its inception in 1979.

North Caulfield holds an annual “Max Stern Cup” where past and current players combine to recognise Max in a match in his honour.

North Caulfield FC committee member Harvey Silver said Stern was "one in a million".

"Never have I met or will I met a person with such zest for life," Silver said.

"Still playing soccer into his 90s, working daily at his stamp shop in Melbourne at 94, generous, always with a smile on his face.

"Max revelled in his status as the oldest registered football player in Australia and will be truly missed at North Caulfield where he was an icon and role model."
